Transportation Specialist

Location: South Bend, IN
Travel: Up to 25%
Pay rate: $28-31/hr

Position Summary
The Transportation Specialist manages end-to-end shipping documentation and logistics coordination for government, commercial, and international shipments. This role ensures compliance with government requirements, accuracy in documentation and order reconciliation, and timely movement of goods by collaborating across internal teams, carriers, and government representatives. The ideal candidate brings strong SAP experience, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mixed office/manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Government & Military Shipping 
    • Process JLTV and broader military shippers; maintain complete and accurate shipment files.
    • Analyze contract requirements for DD250 processing and compliance.
    • Prepare Government Bills of Lading (GBOL) and other required military forms.
  • Commercial & International Shipping 
    • Create and manage commercial and international shipping documentation (e.g., commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates as required).
    • Reconcile customer and internal orders for accuracy and completeness.
  • Systems & Execution 
    • Execute goods issue transactions and maintain shipment records in SAP.
    • Coordinate pickups and deliveries with carriers and internal stakeholders.
    • Distribute documentation to appropriate parties in a timely manner.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration 
    • Interface with government representatives, customer service, production, quality, and warehouse/yard operations to resolve issues and meet ship dates.
    • Support audits and continuous improvement initiatives related to shipping accuracy, compliance, and cycle time.
Qualifications
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree preferred; 1–2 years of shipping/transportation experience required (government/military logistics experience is a plus).
  • Systems: Hands-on SAP experience required.
  • Tools: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).

Physical Requirements
  • Vision: Regular use of close/distance/color/peripheral vision with ability to adjust focus to read screens, reports, and labels.
  • Hearing: Able to hear and communicate effectively in office and plant environments.
  • Hand–Eye Coordination & Dexterity: Frequent use of hands/arms for computer, phone, and office equipment; ability to handle documents and package labels.
  • Mobility & Agility: Regular bending, stretching, twisting, and reaching; ability to move throughout office, plant, yard, and adjacent property.
  • Climbing/Kneeling: Occasional climbing, stooping, crouching, or kneeling with balance.
  • Lifting/Strength: Occasionally lift up to 25 lbs; ability to push, pull, or carry objects as needed.
  • Stamina: Occasionally perform repetitive or strenuous tasks; ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
Working Conditions
  • Environment: Role operates between office and manufacturing plant settings; may be exposed to varying conditions including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, heights, and constant/intermittent loud noise.
  • Pace & Focus: Fast-paced setting with repetitive tasks; strong concentration and quality control focus required.
  • Teamwork & Process Adherence: Works closely with cross-functional teams; follows established procedures and instructions to ensure accurate, compliant, and efficient shipping.
  • Safety: Must understand and follow proper equipment and machinery use and safety protocols (training provided where applicable).
Travel
  • Up to 25% travel may be required for vendor meetings, site visits, audits, or training.
