Safety Manager
Hybrid | Detroit, MI | $60/hour | Contract with Possible Extension
We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager to oversee enterprise-wide safety programs and contractor safety performance in a hybrid role based in Detroit, Michigan. This position plays a critical role in driving safety accountability, regulatory compliance, and a strong safety culture across planning, coordination, and logistics operations.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all aspects of safety management, including Miss Dig program oversight.
Lead and present to safety governance forums (Safety Committees, Safety Summits, etc.) to review incidents, safety metrics (OSHA rates, man-hours), and drive accountability.
Support and oversee the enterprise contractor safety program, including policy feedback and performance monitoring.
Develop safety presentations, review contractor safety events, and submit safety performance reports to senior leadership.
Facilitate contractor safety meetings (monthly, weekly, and ad hoc as needed).
Track and manage enterprise-wide safety initiatives and key safety indicators.
Provide daily field support and safety observations, including participation in toolbox talks, pre-job briefs, and daily safety calls.
Serve as a Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) to address field questions, safety concerns, and escalations.
Respond to safety incidents and near-misses in real time, coordinating initial investigations and ensuring immediate corrective actions.
Coordinate internal safety audits and mock MIOSHA inspections, addressing findings to ensure regulatory compliance.
Issue Safety Alerts and bulletins following incidents to communicate root causes and preventive actions.
Organize and lead Safety Stand-Downs after incidents to reinforce learning and prevention.
Oversee contractor safety training, tracking completion and compliance as a leading safety indicator.
Drive initiatives that strengthen safety culture and promote safety as a core organizational value.
Communicate safety performance, trends, and success stories to leadership and field teams.
Gather workforce feedback on safety concerns and improvement opportunities.
Ensure lessons learned are shared and incorporated into training and process improvements.
Research and evaluate emerging safety technologies.
Perform additional safety-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Experience managing safety programs in construction, utilities, infrastructure, or logistics environments.
Strong knowledge of OSHA and MIOSHA regulations.
Proven experience supporting or managing contractor safety programs.
Ability to lead incident investigations and communicate findings effectively.
Strong presentation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Comfortable working both in the field and with senior leadership.
Position Details
Work Location: Hybrid – Detroit, MI (Walker Cisler Building)
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday
Contract Duration: Approx. 6 months (1,040 hours) with possible extension
Hourly Rate: $60/hour
Travel: None required
