Project Engineer – HVAC / Building Automation Systems (BAS)

$87.91/Hour | Long-Term Contract | Possible Extension or Direct Hire
Hybrid Role – Detroit, MI

Our client is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support large-scale HVAC and Building Automation System (BAS) projects within a complex facilities environment. This is a long-term hybrid contract opportunity based in Detroit with strong potential for extension or direct hire. Position Overview

The Project Engineer will work independently and alongside Project Managers to design, coordinate, and implement HVAC-related capital projects ranging from smaller facility upgrades to initiatives valued up to $5M. This role is heavily involved in engineering design, project scoping, scheduling, cost estimating, risk assessment, and stakeholder coordination across multiple concurrent projects.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical HVAC engineering expertise combined with project execution experience in commercial or industrial facilities environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary engineering interface for resolving HVAC and BAS design issues
  • Develop project scopes, preliminary engineering schedules, cost estimates, and risk assessments
  • Lead scope definition meetings and provide ongoing updates related to engineering design, budgets, schedules, and project status
  • Coordinate with Facilities leadership, operations teams, contractors, and project stakeholders to ensure alignment and successful execution
  • Support bid package development and contractor evaluation processes
  • Monitor engineering costs and ensure projects remain on schedule
  • Provide troubleshooting support for HVAC systems and BAS controls across existing facilities assets
  • Support updates and enhancements to HVAC and BAS standards
  • Work across multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
Qualifications
Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Strong understanding of commercial/industrial HVAC systems and controls
  • Proven experience managing multiple engineering projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and organizational skills
Preferred

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License
  • Experience with BAS controls design and application
  • Experience with Niagara Tridium BAS systems
  • Working knowledge of BIM, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), and/or Revit
  • PMI/PMP Certification
