Location: onsite job at Ideal’s Detroit location: 2525 Clark Street, Detroit, MI 48209

Under general direction from the CFO, the employee in the Controller position will be responsible for managing all aspects of the accounting department. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, finance functions, and project job cost activities.  The Controller will be responsible for monthly reporting, accounting file maintenance, monthly financial statement preparation, audit management, and general financial analysis.   

Experience and Education Required:

  • Seven (7) plus years in the construction industry with extensive knowledge of the following is required:
    • Work-in-progress (WIP) schedule                  
    • Job costing 
    • Job forecasting
    • Month-end closing
    • Reporting requirements for general liability and worker’s compensation insurance
    • Builder’s Risk 
    • Bonding and Surety Management
    • Construction Lien Law
    • Progress Billings
    • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
    • Annual audits
    • Treasury management: daily cash flow and covenant compliance
    • Reporting. 
  • ERP experience required; prefer knowledge with Viewpoint.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience in leading and developing a team with a minimum of ten (10) direct reports preferred.
  • Previous payroll department oversight preferred.
  • Multi-state reporting preferred.
  • Ability to interpret construction contracts and understand insurance, bonding, and financial requirements.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Proficient in ERP
  • Ability to produce ad hoc financial reports timely.
  • Ability to maneuver through various software programs simultaneously.
  • Ability to use search tools, browsers, email, attach files, scan, and fax.
  • Possess strong oral/written communication skills.
  • Communicate effectively, tactfully, and courteously with all internal and external customers to exchange and convey information.
  • Ability to work independently where judgment and discretion are applied.

  • Lift, handle, and carry materials, equipment, and supplies as necessary up to five (5) pounds. 
  • Lift five (5) pounds floor to waist, lift five (5) pounds waist to shoulder, lift and carry up to five (5) pounds, and push/pull five (5) pounds.  
  • Sit, stand, bend, lift, push, pull, stoop, walk, reach, and move intermittently during working hours.
  • Coordination necessary to operate computers and office equipment with pushbuttons and/or touch screens.

Hours of Employment:

Normal business operation hours

hours of employment are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. reporting in person to the Detroit location at 2525 Clark Street. Schedule may be modified by the CFO due to department operations as needed.  

Compensation:

The employee in the Controller position is an exempt employee under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act ("FLSA"), 29 USC §§201, et Seq., and as a result thereof is entitled to accumulate or to be paid any compensatory time off or overtime.

Salary to be commensurate according to candidate’s skills and experience level.  

The position offers an attractive benefit package that includes medical insurance (Blue Cross

Blue Shield PPO, HMO and Health Savings plan options available), dental coverage, vision coverage, life insurance, short-term disability, and long-term disability plans on the first of the month following the date of hire.  Paid time off and 401K plan offered upon reaching eligibility.
