Job Description

Our client, a major utility company, is looking for some Associate Scientists with a Chemistry background to work with their team onsite at their site in Detroit, MI. 
 
This is a long-term contract position (eligible for extension or direct hire for the right candidate) that offers a starting pay rate of $25-$28hour (based on education and experience).

The Associate Scientist’s role is to perform a variety of technical work requiring application of scientific principles, techniques, and procedures.


The Associate Scientist prepares samples for analysis, records data, and performs routine tests and studies. They will prepare reagents and standards for chemical analyses and conduct routine environmental testing. This may include various wet chemistry techniques such as extractions, dilutions, hot plate and microwave digestions, pipetting, along with the preparation and cleaning of glassware and work areas. Typical assignments are in the form of problem solving and technical support for the optimum operation and maintenance of company assets.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Follows standard work instructions for technical tasks.
  • Prepares samples for analysis.
  • Actively participates in process improvement and safety efforts.
  • Uses Laboratory Information Management System (LIMs) for sample login and data entry.
  • Maintains accurate and complete lab data notebook, communicates precise and accurate results of analyses in accordance with prescribed lab procedures and systems.
  • Performs monitoring and testing of system performance by data collection or laboratory testing.

 
 
 

Job Requirements

Qualifications

 

Required

  • Bachelor Degree in Chemistry, Bio-chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field
    • Individuals who will be obtaining their degree within nine months from submitting interest will be considered; however, verification of the degree will be required prior to starting the job.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and laboratory operations
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently and able to prioritize a sample’s importance
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing with people at all levels both within and outside the company

 

Preferred

  • Master Degree in Chemistry, Bio-chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Applied knowledge or experience with instrumentation or analyses such as ICP, GC, GC/MS, FT-IR, UVVis, Spectroscopy, Karl Fischer, TGA, XRF, BTU, Proximate, LECO, Calorimetry, lubrication and oil testing, viscosity, Flash Point, and other wet chemistry is a plus.
  • Knowledge of labs LIMs system.
